BACKGROUND

MANIS is a database process developed by MXD to assist individuals and groups
involved in neighborhood redevelopment efficiently manage, track, plan and market
their communities and individual properties.

The MANIS Process, used by community redevelopment groups (CDC's), property
managers, and others, streamlines neighborhood building activities by providing an
easy to use and completely accessible database.

The formation of The MANIS Group in 1996 was based on the overall mission and
philosophy of MXD. MXD's mission has always focused on urban revitalization and
a "bottom-up" approach to help cities achieve this end.

"Bottom-up" means the people who live in areas identified for redevelopment
participate in the planning of their community and have access to the most
advance tools (MANIS) to make their participation possible.

 
COMPARISONS - Markets & User Needs

A COMPUTER BASED ATLAS

Good for: Looking up addresses in the US.
Requirements: Software $100 or Web Access. No Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) experience required.

Not Good for: Development Activities or geographic information at the property level.

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (G.I.S.)
Good for: Data Analysis (typically demographics) at large urban scales (city,
block group and block level). Typically used by Federal, State, County, City
Agencies, Academic Institutions, Utility Companies and some Large Consulting
Firms (Planning).

Requirements: Software $3,000 - $100,000. GIS Staff $30,000 - $55,000/per
person annually + staff training & updating (Limited or no access by the general
public. Typically, internal use only)

Limited for: Development Activities down to the parcel level or individual building
or interior space level.

MANIS is data tracking for urban assets under management
and development.

Used comprehensively, MANIS can advertise an entire city
and communities to potential residents, investors and businesses.

Individuals, public and private foundations interested in supporting
a city's communities can have MANIS via computer network, email,
fax or mail.
