Architectural
Program For The Design
of a
New Sanctuary and Family Life Center
Jacksonville,
Florida
BACKGROUND
The Bethel Baptist Institutional Church was built in
1905 and it is the oldest existing Baptist Church in
the State of Florida. The original sanctuary is on the
National Register of Historic Places.

TASK
MXD was commissioned by the project Architect to
complete the architectural program for the 80,000
square feet 2,500 seat sanctuary and family life building
for Bethel. MXD along with the design team met with
the various church subcommittee members to discuss
their needs and goals for the new sanctuary and family
life building.

Care Facility

ORIENTATION:
Provide a day care facility
that is easy to locate in the church.

ACCESSIBILITY:
Provide access to the
sanctuary for the disabled and elderly beyond
signs and symbols.

SEPARATED
FLOW: Maintain the flexibility
of the day care facility by having separate
areas for activities for children of different
age/skill levels.

FLEXIBILITY:
Create spaces for the children
that are responsive to a growing congregation
and visitor population through
versatility.




COLLABORATION
These
meetings addressed the baptismal area,
cafeteria, choir, day care, gymnasium, library,
communion, sound and audio visual, finance,
archives, pastor's suite/board room, exterior
development, and the chapel of the the existing
historic church.
From
these meetings, we developed the architectural
program with goals and objectives, facts, needs
programmatic concepts, and problem statements to
address the needs and goals of congregation.
The
development cost for this project was $10 million.
