Community
Redevelopment Plan

MXD was hired by the architectural firm on this project to
provide urban design services, townhouse design and urban
safety analysis. One of our landscape design consultants,
E.L.Tarlton & Associates, was charged with providing
public
improvement design (i.e., hardscape and landscape
design).
The
goal of the public housing (Jordan Park) residents and
the Wildwood neighborhood residents was to reintroduce
the "seamless" community that once existed.

Everyone
felt that this could best be accomplished by the
street grid being reinstated. When the public housing site
was built some 40 years ago, it split the community in half.
Residents in the public housing & in the community wanted
to eliminate the stigma attached to the public housing
property.
We
found the best way to accomplish this was to provide
the community with diversity in its housing types, strength
from its historic buildings, increasing interaction among
residents, and beauty from its green
spaces.

Therefore, the
master plan provided for a seamless
and secure residential environment for the
Jordan Park/Wildwood Heights residents.
The concept provided for many new elements &
amenities to achieve the goals of the greater
community. These were:
1. Reestablishment
of the street grid system
2. Streetscape
improvements (sidewalks, lighting,
street trees, cross walks, bus shelters, etc.)
3. Gateway
signage
4. Senior citizen
housing
5. Single family
housing
6. Townhomes
7. Expanding and
adding new park and
recreation areas
8. Providing for a
town center with retail and
other services
