Three
Typical Suburban Metro Atlanta High Schools
Utilizing
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design
(CPTED)
Metro Atlanta, Georgia
BACKGROUND
The
schools in this study were Central Gwinnett High School, in
Gwinnett County,
South Cobb High School and Campbell High School in Cobb County. All
three high
schools have fairly diverse student populations with student bodies
around 1,500
pupils. These schools were selected as pilots for this study by the
local school boards
in the counties where they are located.

Central Gwinnett
High School
METHOD
Our
CPTED team visited each school over the course of several months.
Demographic
and crime data for the neighborhoods surrounding each school were
also collected
as part of the overall CPTED analysis process.
The analysis of the school & neighborhood environment further
included computer
modeling of the movement patterns surrounding each school, each
school's campus
and each school's interior.
Since the location of a school campus, building entrances, and the
layout of corridors
all have security implications, these models were used to assess
where people and
students were likely to be in and around each
school.

Campbell High
School
The
CPTED review and analysis of each school was based on six analysis
areas.
These areas were the school grounds, parking lots, corridors, rest
rooms, locker
rooms and classrooms.
The CPTED team also developed and administered self reporting
surveys designed
for administrators, faculty, students, security officers and
parents. The CPTED team
used the results of these surveys to aid in developing
recommendations for increased
school safety and campus security.

South Cobb High
School
Each
of the schools involved in this School Safety and Campus Security
Study were
provided with cost estimates to help determine the funds needed to
implement the
recommendations outlined in the final report.
